Specifications:

  • Wind Turbine(s) Count: 13
  • Supplier: Enercon
  • Total Capacity: 10 Mega Watts
  • Biodiesel Generator
  • Supplier: MAN
  • Capacity: 13 Mega Watts

The suppliers are also shareholders in the project company together with majority shareholder Evelop, to form Ecopower Bonaire BV. Ecopower was established specifically to develop this project and deliver energy to Bonaire’s Water & Energy Company (WEB).

The wind farm will be located on the the north coast of Bonaire, where it is believed to be the ideal setting. Provided there was sufficient wind, the wind farm would be able to meet the entire demand for electricity on its own. The biodiesel plant is being constructed to create and maintain a stable electricity network.

The biodiesel plant will initially run on conventional fuel oil, experiments are currently being carried out with the production of bio-oil from algae. It is expected that the plant will switch to biofuel after 2 to 3 years.

The Wind-biodiesel setup
This setup assisted by a 3-megawatt battery back-up, will meet the demand for energy consumption on the island and lower costs of energy in comparison to the current oil based production.
